Wage Index Services

Toyon analyzes the average hourly wage and related wage index to meet the needs and objectives of the health system, the individual hospital, and the entire CBSA. We work with you and the hospitals in the CBSA to determine if there are opportunities to improve the wage index. Our experts thoroughly analyze your wage, benefit, contract labor and home office data for accurate reporting. We use a proprietary workbook that streamlines our wage index studies and the results provide auditable documentation that can be directly sent to the MAC to facilitate their wage index audits.

We focus on the average hourly wage (AHW) reporting of the following critical categories:

Occupational Mix Services

Section 304(c) of Public Law 106-554 requires the Medicare Occupational Mix Survey (OMS) to be completed every three (3) years. The intent of the OMS is to account for the impact of specific hiring decisions on a hospital’s AHW. Information from the OMS can either positively or negatively impact a hospital’s Medicare IPPS reimbursement. We use a proprietary workbook that streamlines our wage index and the results to provide auditable documentation that can be directly sent to the MAC to facilitate audits. 

Toyon will execute the following to complete the occupational mix survey: 

  • Thoroughly analyze and investigate job categorizations in payroll and contract labor records  

  • Categorize hospital employees, contract labor, and home office personnel in their respective occupational mix classifications: Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Aides, Medical Assistants, and All Other 

  • Identify, acquire, and summarize all allowable contract labor for occupational mix reporting 

  • Calculate excluded unit ratios and overhead cost center allocations 

  • Compare and assess the reasonableness of the prior survey compared to the current survey and investigate any significant variances 

Toyon provides the following upon completion of wage index and occupational mix services: 

  • Executive summary of findings and recommendations including process improvement and automation opportunities.  

  • Analyze the results with management and upon agreement incorporate the findings and/or file the occupational mix survey
